barbara shelley, queen of hammer horror, dead at 88
Barbara Shelley, the elegant leading lady whose work with the UK's Hammer horror films made her a legend in the genre, died Monday at 88 after contracting and apparently recovering from COVID-19 in December.
In confirming her death to the PA news agency, her agent said the actor had earned the title of Queen of Hammer Horror with her ability to be "quietly evil" in the studio's Gothic fare. "She goes from statuesque beauty to just animalistic wildness."
After some early work in Italian films in the '50s, her role in the campy "Cat Girl" (1957) in which her character is possessed by the spirit of a leopard brought her to the attention of low-budget horror studio Hammer, which hired her for "The Camp on Blood Island" (1958).
She appeared in Hammer's "Blood of the Vampire" (1958), "The Gorgon" (1964), "Dracula: Prince of Darkness" (1966), "Rasputin: The Mad Monk" (1966), and "Quartermass and the Pit" (1967), her classic beauty the perfect component in the period-piece exercises in gore. She loved it, and never downplayed her work.
Hammer was like a family," she told Express, "a very talented family, and there was a wonderful canteen down there! To work with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee... Ive been more than lucky, Ive been honored. They were so wonderful to work with, both so generous as actors, with a wonderful atmosphere on the set and a wonderful sense of humor.
She also appeared in the horror classic "Village of the Damned," surrounded by blonde-haired children with glowing eyes, and was busy on TV on such series as "The Avengers" (1961), "The Saint" (1962), the "Doctor Who" serial "Planet of Fire" (1984), and the popular British soap "EastEnders" (1988).
Her last TV work came in the 1989 British miniseries "Uncle Silas," and she appeared in a short entitled "More Than a Messiah" in 1992, her last performance. After retirement, she pursued interior design and worked with charities, including the Stroke Association.
mc hammer tickets, 2021 concert tour dates | ticketmaster
Feb 15, 2020 @ LA Live. MC Hammer is 57 years old and brought the house DOWN!!! I wish I could upload a video. His dancers are amazing and he sounds and dances great! My only critique is there are lonnnnnnnng pauses in between his songs. He was part of an all-80's line up of about 10-15 bands, and he was the only Rapper. Because of his performance, I'm now a huge fan and want to see a show with just him. Great performer!
We drove almost 3 hours from the Bay Area to see this concert. We had great seats, concert attendees all around us were friendly and ready to PAR-TAAA! The drinks were flowing and the weather was perfect, not too hot and not too cold. I'm not a big fan of Rap so I can't remember the opening act's name (Furious Fortune or something like that), I wasn't impressed. All the other acts, including Hammer, and with the exception of En Vogue, performed to tapped music, what happened to LIVE entertainment. Blackstreet and Montel Jordan were good but I would have rather experienced them in front of a band. Oh, BTW, Montel needs to stick to the Church, I'm sure he's a great preacher and believes he was saved by the Almighty God, but you can't mix a gospel sermon with R & B, it just doesn't work and sends a confusing message. Now, MC Hammer had one of the BEST opening acts I have ever seen, he and about 50 dancers stormed the stage and danced to "Let's Get it Started!" It was wonderful. Then the dancers left and Hammer was on the stage all by himself, no band. My partner and I left. It was worth the 3 hour drive and I look forward to seeing real Old School performers in the future like the Whispers, the O'Jays, Cameo, Jeffery Osborne and ConFunkShun. They know what entertainment really is.
The concert was good. Great seeing MC Hammer on tour. Even though he still had his back up dancers do majority of the entertaining. He did many down times where he went to the back and even the back up dancers went to change. It seemed strange to me.
The venue is a casino amphitheater. Loved the crowd. The older generation that respect others and their space. I enjoyed the variety of foods and drinks to purchase.
Show was great, performance was fun and entertaining. True Hammer form, lots of people on stage with him including his daughters and son. Lots of youth. Hammer looked and sounded great. Fun Show!!
I was so impressed with the whole show En Vogue really impressed me because I grew up with them not only that they look good but also still sounded good and Hammer was off the chain he hung in there with them youngsters I love the stage presence it was fantastic I would love to see the show all over again go hammer go hammer

In contrast to other film versions, Jekyll (Paul Massie) was portrayed as a rather bland and faceless person, while Hyde was presented as suave and handsome. This reflects director Terence Fisher's belief in what critics called "the charm of evil".PLOT - Dr. Henry Jekyll is experimenting with what he believes is the dual nature of all men: that there is in everyone both a good and an evil side of their personality that is in constant conflict. He's been publicly ridiculed for his theories but he presses on. His wife Kitty worries about him and tells him she very much dislikes his friend Paul Allen who she feels is taking advantage of him. That doesn't stop her from going out dancing with him however and soon falls in love with him. Alone in his lab, Jekyll injects himself with a solution he's developed - and a new personality emerges, that of Mr. Hyde. The use of the drug causes his entire metabolism to accelerate. He decides to exact his revenge on Allen and Kitty.TRAILER - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmcgKQrwxrA
The film marks one of the few occasions when Hammer turned to Greek mythology for inspiration; this time it is the legend of the Gorgon. The visual effects were considered somewhat lacking - Prudence Hyman's snake-filled wig was worked by five wires which were attached to a box that was about 25 feet behind her.PLOT - In early-twentieth-century middle-Europe, villagers are literally becoming petrified. Although the authorities try to hush the matter up, it is apparent that at the full moon, Megaera, a Gorgon, leaves her castle lair and anyone looking on her face is turned to stone. When this fate befalls a visitor, experts from the University of Leipzig arrive to try and get to the bottom of it all.TRAILER - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeQTmGt-7wE
In The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Hammer were barred from copying any details from the Universal films of the 30s and '40s, including the famous monster make-up. As this was distributed by Universal, Hammer had free rein to copy elements from the franchise, most noticeably the creature's make-up and the laboratory sets.PLOT - Penniless, Baron Frankenstein, accompanied by his eager assistant Hans, arrives at his family castle near the town of Karlstaad, vowing to continue his experiments in the creation of life. Fortuitously finding the creature he was previously working on, he brings it back to a semblance of life but requires the services of a mesmerist, Zoltan, to successfully animate it. The greedy and vengeful Zoltan secretly sends the monster into town to steal gold and 'punish' the burgomaster and the chief of police, which acts lead to a violent confrontation between the baron and the townspeople.TRAILER - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLPsFMW84eE
