The composition of the green sand moulding mixture develops high mould strength through mechanical compression. Typically, Green Sand is composed of 3.0% - 3.7 % water content, clay, silica sand and carbon. The mixture retains high moisture and subsequently better adhesion as the water is absorbed between the clay platelets.

In foundries, the Green Sand-casting process is widely synonymous with casting ferrous and nonferrous metals. This results in swelling and enhanced compaction of sand. Undoubtedly, Green Sand has played a prominent role in delivering quality castings and moulds by improving their structural integrity.

1. Green sand casting, too, has its restriction in attaining a smooth and fine surface finish. Therefore, the quantity of additive in the sand moulding should be as minimum as possible to achieve a smooth surface finish sans defects or irregularities. To attain the finesse quality of the additive, albeit kept to a minimum, plays a key role. A reliable sand-testing program can assure consistently high-quality castings.

2. Quite a few casting defects due to metal-mould reaction can be reduced via de-oxidation of the atmosphere in the mould cavity. Active carbon plays a key role in the process by precipitating lustrous carbon and giving off its carbon to eliminate imperfections. Once the atmosphere in the mould cavity is reduced, the oxidation defects, such as pinholes and penetration, are effectively prevented. Nonetheless, foundries should be attentive to the temperature under which lustrous carbon additive imparts its carbon which is higher in Green Sand mouldings as put forward by Deepak Chowdhary in Green Sand Management Role & Application of Carbonaceous Additives and Concept of total Carbon in a Green Sand System.

3. In Green Sand, the level of compactibility is flexible and can be adjusted by tuning the system. It should be maintained that the moisture content is kept at 3.8%-4.0% in conventional lines and 3.2%-3.7% in high-pressure lines.

Once the casting is completed, the sand is usually rendered spent or useless unless processed to separate the residues for reuse since some functional properties are still left intact in the mix.
