Your washing machine is supposed to make everything spotlessly clean and freshly scented. So, what do you do when your washer smells dirtier than your dirty laundry? Where is that foul odor coming from? More importantly, how can you get rid of it? Let's find out.

Washing machine odors are almost always caused by a gradual build-up of bacteria, mildew, limescale, or soap scumor a combination of all four. If you regularly use cool wash cycles to save energy, you may not be generating enough heat to remove post-wash residue and kill the bacteria that likes to feed on it. But you don't have to switch to hot wash cycles: there are some simple fixes for your odorous washing machine.

Fortunately, that moldy or eggy smell is likely coming from parts of your washing machine that can be easily cleaned. You shouldn't have too much trouble reaching the residue on drums, seals, gaskets, and dispensers. The key is using the right cleaning solutions, tools, and techniques to ensure completely spotless results. Seals and gaskets: Mold, soap scum, and other build-ups are all too easy to see on your washer's seals. Whether you have a front- or top-loading model, it's simple to get the door or lid seals clean again. In fact, hot soapy water and an old rag should be all you need. If not, don't be tempted to use harsh chemical cleaners or steel woolinstead, opt for an old toothbrush and white vinegar. Dispensers: Most newer washing machines have removable detergent, bleach, and/or softener dispensers, whether they're drawers or cup inserts. But stubborn soap build-ups will inevitably accumulate in these dispensers over time. Left unchecked, this gunk will become the perfect breeding ground for stinky bacteria. Remove the dispenser, soak it in hot water, and give it a thorough scrub with that old toothbrush again. You may also be able to run it through the dishwasher; just be sure to check your user manual first. Drum: Luckily, you don't have to get hands-on to clean your washer's largest component! Instead, you can have the washer wash itself. Either use an off-the-shelf washing machine cleaner or try the following DIY method: Combine 1/4 cup of water with 1/4 cup of baking soda; pour into the soap dispenser Pour two cups of white vinegar into your empty washing machine Run a hot wash cycle With a few small changes to your laundry routine, you can also prevent those unwanted odors from ever returning. For instance, use the right detergent for your model to reduce leftover suds and, if possible, make sure your last wash cycle of the day is set to hot. You can also simply leave the door or lid open to allow moisture to dissipate more effectively.

If the odor smells like sewageand the cleaning tips above haven't helpedthe problem may be with your drain rather than the washing machine itself. If possible, pull the washer away from the wall and remove the washing machine hose from the permanent standpipe. If the smell worsens, that's likely where the problem lies. Either attempt a fix yourself (for example, pouring a white vinegar/baking soda solution into the drainpipe) or book an appointment with one of our local specialists. We usually get the job done in just one visit.*

how to clean a top load washing machine

how to clean a top load washing machine

Even with the gallons of water that run through a washer with each load of laundry, it still needs to be cleaned. Each load of dirty clothes leaves a tiny bit of soil, bacteria, mineral deposits from the water, and residue from detergent and fabric softener. The residue left in washing machines can create odors, food for mildew growth, white streaks on dark clothes, and leave all fabrics looking dull or gray. While front-load washers have a reputation for build-up that causes odors, high-efficiency and standard top-load washers can develop the same issues and should be cleaned regularly.

Every type of top-load washer should be thoroughly cleaned at least twice per year. If you have automatic dispensers and use them for each load, they should be cleaned monthly to prevent clogs. Since the same mineral deposits that form in the washer tub can also clog washer hoses, if you live in a hard water area, you should clean the washer every three months.

Becausehigh-efficiency top-load washersuse much less water than standard top-load machines with a center agitator, they should be cleaned more oftenat least every three months. If your laundry loads are heavily-soiled with grease or dirt or if you live in a hot, humid area where mold is an issue, monthly cleaning is recommended.

If you have the Whirlpool 2-in-1 top-load washer with the removable center agitator, you can leave the agitator attached or remove it during a cleaning cycle. At least twice a year, remove the agitator and check for trapped lint or debris.

If someone in your home is ill or has a compromised immune system, while the likelihood of contamination from bacteria or a virus is low if the clothing is dried on high heat, take the time to clean the washing machine more frequently.

Do not add the distilled white vinegar with the chlorine bleach. The combination of products can produce toxic chlorine gas, which is dangerous in even small amounts. If you are sensitive to the odor of chlorine bleach, open windows to ensure good ventilation or turn on an exhaust fan in your laundry area if you have one.

If your dispensers are not removable, heat one cup of distilled white vinegar in a microwaveable cup or in a small pan on the stovetop. It should be very warm but does not need to be boiling. Pour the heated vinegar into the dispensers and allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes to loosen any residue.

With the freshly cleaned dispensers in place, fill the drum of the washer again with hot water. Be sure the settings are still on large load and the longest wash cycle. Stop the cycle before the washer begins to agitate.

Now that the interior of your washer is fresh and clean, take the time to wipe down the outer housing. Mix a solution of warm water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Dip a microfiber cloth in the solution and wring out most of the water.

ge front-load washers now fight germs and bad smells - cnet

Select GE front-loading washing machines will soon guard against bad smells in their washing drums. GE Appliances plans to give some models what it calls an UltraFresh system that company says will work to keep the inside of its washers clean and odor-free.

A moldy, stinky washing machine is a real concern, especially with front-loading models. Front-loaders use drums that are mounted horizontally inside the body of the washing machine (opening facing sideways). To keep water, dirt and detergent from escaping onto the floor, their drums are sealed by rubbery gaskets.

Sometimes, excess water can collect inside these gaskets between wash cycles. If it sits there for too long, that moisture can encourage mold and germ growth. That in turn leads to foul odors inside the appliance. Many Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag and LG washers in the past have suffered from this issue.

Apparently, GE UltraFresh washing machines aren't prone to the same fate. They'll have gaskets designed to drain away residual water. To remove additional moisture, a venting system pulls in fresh air from outside. There it circulates within the drum, and wicks away water still lurking in the drum, gasket and door.

GE UltraFresh washers will also have specially treated surfaces: The gasket, drum and detergent dispenser pump all have technology courtesy of company Microbanthat GE Appliances says will further reduce the chances of microbes and odors gaining a foothold.

how to clean a washing machine and get rid of the smell

how to clean a washing machine and get rid of the smell

While doing your daily chores, you put the dirty laundry in the washing machine, pouring in a ton of detergent and fabric softeners. However, when the cycle is over, a strange, unpleasant smell seems to come out of your machine and it just wont go away. Before you start browsing through appliance shop catalogues, try to remember the last time you actually gave your washer a good scrub. If no such memories come to mind, then maybe it is time for a nice, thorough cleaning.

If you live in an area with hard water, there is also a big possibility that there is a lot of limescale build-up. Limescale can cause various breakdowns in your washing machine which may lead to unnecessary repairs and call out charges.

Most families in the UK rely on front-loading washers because this type of appliance requires less water and energy than top-loaders. However, they also tend to develop mould and nasty smells, due to their many compartments. Usually, there is a manual that explains how to clean your washing machine drum properly and remove those nasty smells without causing any damage.

The gasket is the perfect place for mould and mildew to develop from leftover detergents. To enjoy clean laundry, you have to clean your washing machine door seal frequently. This will keep mould and dirt at bay. Here is how its done:

Take your time cleaning, especially if there is already a bit of built-up residue. This will not only take care of the seal, but will also make sure that your laundry wont pick up any dirt when youre taking it out of the machine.

Luckily, the tray can be easily removed and cleaned outside of the washer. If a lot of dirt has built up, use a toothbrush to clean all the corners of your detergent drawer, and remove the encrusted washing powder. You can use a paste of baking soda and water or just regular dish soap.

The filter ensures that lint, stray tissues, and bigger pieces of dirt are not sucked in along with the water, obstructing the flow. Its also the perfect place for a germ party, so you should keep an eye on it and clean it frequently.

For this technique, you will need clove oil. You can find this type of oil in most chemists and health food stores. No matter if you have a front or a top-loader, just pour 10 drops of clove oil directly into the drum and start the machine on the hottest setting. Make sure to open all doors and windows while the cycle is running. This step is important because the smell of clove oil is extremely potent.

If you live alone and you tend to use the washing machine two times a week at the most, once a month should be more than enough to keep your appliance in top shape. If you have a family with kids and pets, you should clean it a bit more often. Greasy and heavily soiled clothing speeds up the dirt build-up process in your washer, as well as the need of washing machine services. You can read more on this subject in our How Often Should You Clean a Washing Machine post.

Hard water can cause your washing machine a lot of trouble. We all know that it is the main reason behind the build-up of limescale, which can lead to corrosion of the heating elements. It also creates the perfect environment for bacteria to develop. Still, there is a way you can reduce its negative effect on your washer just try adding water softening tablets and use special hard water laundry detergents. For more tips on limescale removal, check out this post.

Not everyone has the time to pay special attention to their washing machine with each house clean. For all of you busy bees out there, we have a regular domestic cleaning service. This is an hourly-based service, which you can order as frequently as you need.

If your washing machine needs some extra care, the cleaner will handle the task to ensure that both its interior and exterior parts are in clean condition. So, scratch off the washer from your To-do list and leave the hard work to us.
