In the mineral processing area, the trommel screens(aka. Rotary drum screens) and vibrating screens are both widely used screening & classification equipment. But whats the difference between the trommel screens and vibrating screens, and how to choose the most suitable screens for your mineral processing application? Or even how should we choose the right screening equipment for specific mining conditions?

Thorough we all may know that they are both are widely used screening equipment, but the different working methods and principles also mean the difference in output, as well as the types of materials suitable for screening processing.

Vibrating screens are screened using the exciting force generated by a vibrating motor and belong to vibrating screens. Commonly used mine vibrating screens include circular vibrating screens and linear screens.

The trommel screen is another screening form. During the screening process, the equipment will not vibrate, but generally, the motor and reducer drive the drum to rotate through the bearing. The material in the drum passes through the screen from high to low due to the rotation of the drum. And it is successfully screened out, so the trommel screen belongs to a type of rolling screening.

The roller device is installed on the frame obliquely. The motor is connected with the roller device through a coupling through a reducer, and drives the roller device to rotate around its axis. When the material enters the drum device, due to the tilt and rotation of the drum device, the material on the screen surface is turned and rolled. The qualified materials (products under the screen) are discharged through the outlet at the bottom of the rear end of the drum, and the unqualified materials (on the screen) The product is discharged through the discharge port at the end of the drum.

Using the vibration motor as the vibration source, the material is thrown up on the screen while moving forward in a straight line. The material enters the inlet of the screening machine evenly from the feeder, and produces several kinds of screens through the multi-layer screen. The upper and lower objects are discharged from their respective outlets.

The screen surface is fixed on the screen box, and the screen box is suspended or supported by springs. The bearing of the main shaft is installed on the screen box and is driven by the pulley to rotate at high speed. The eccentric counterweight plate is installed on the main shaft and generates centrifugal inertia force with the rotation of the main shaft, so that the screen box forms an approximate circular orbit vibration.

The trommel screen can be divided into single-layer, double-layer and three-layer vibrating screens according to the number of layers of the screen. This vibrating screen is also similar, according to the number of screen surface layers can be divided into single-layer, double-layer, three-layer and four-layer vibrating screen.

US-headed manufacturer of tree care, environmental, underground construction, surface mining, and agricultural equipment Vermeer Corporation (Vermeer) is expanding its electric-powered recycling product line with the addition of thenew TR5300EM trommel screen. The new trommel screen "is an excellent addition" to recycling and organic material processing companies looking to help reduce exhaust emissions, noise levels, and maintenance.

Vermeer is expanding its electric-powered recycling product line with the addition of the new TR5300EM trommel screen. This new trommel screen is powered by an industrial-duty, fan-cooled 60-hp (44.7-kW) electric motor, and delivers a drum speed of 0-24 revolutions per minute (rpm) to handle multiple material types, including compost, topsoil, and wood biomass. The quiet operating TR5300EM also features a low hopper infeed with a capacity of 5.5 yd3 (4.2 m3) and includes new service and operating enhancements (photo courtesy Vermeer).

According to Jay Van Roekel, product manager for Vermeer Recycling and Forestry products, the demand for electric equipment to process organic material is growing, and the TR5300EM complements the line of electric recycling and processing equipment Vermeer produces.

The TR5300EM is a more compact unit than the TR626EM, making it an excellent option for processing facilities located in urban environments and companies looking to reduce emissions and maintenance, Van Roekel explained.

The hydraulically driven drum on the TR5300EM is 15 ft (4.6 m) long and 5 ft (1.6 m) in diameter to optimize material processing and deliver a high-quality end product. Quick-change screens and a quick-change drum help make it convenient and quick to perform sizing adjustments.

The TR5300EMovers and fines conveyors are adjustable to help with dust control and allow for precise placement of material. The unit is also equipped with auto overs flaps to help contain material and reduce spillage.

A lot of electric recycling processing machinery in the market is stationary. However, the ability to move a machine can help make servicing and cleaning more efficient. The TR5300EM is built on a single-axle frame, making it possible to transport it to another jobsite or move it into storage when its not in use, as well as making it convenient for a person performing maintenance or cleaning up material around the unit, explained Van Roekel.

Preventative maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity of trommel screens. Multotec has had trommel screens running for over ten years that are still operational, Anthony Yell, Screening Product Manager, says. Customers can return trommel screens for refurbishment. The rubber lining is stripped off the steel structure, visually inspected for wear and then non-destructive testing carried out to determine the integrity of the trommel structure. If it is still within specification it can be shot-blasted and re-rubber lined, whereupon it will be good to go for many more years.

One of the biggest problems we have today with the larger trommel screens is the high wear rates of the screen media due to the high peripheral speed of the trommel screen itself. In addition, the trend towards larger mills means higher flow rates and velocities. Double the velocity on a polyurethane screen equates to an increase in the wear rate by a factor of five. We have invested extensive research and development into producing panels that last longer, as with large copper processing plants where the large tonnages mean an average run time of 12 to 14 weeks without any stoppages for panel change outs. It has been our objective to develop panels that will last that length of time.

Our heavy duty trommel screens consist of the rubber-lined steel frame and replaceable screening surface. Several modifications can be made to this basic trommel screener, including a dual media screen to produce a two-fraction material grading.

When a client requires a new trommel screen, our first step is to determine the main process parameters of your application. There may be a lot of variation in the diameter of the bolt on flange diameter, for example, as it depends on the size of the mill.

The feed end flange is designed to be compatible with the mill or scrubber flange. The flange has a machined face with a compatible bolting arrangement to the mill / scrubber discharge trunnion flange.

The internal diameter of the feed-end flange or feed-end liners is designed to be the same diameter as the mill discharge or mill discharge liners. The trommel feed end liners can also have a slightly larger diameter to create an outwards step to compensate for wear of the mill discharge liners.

Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) across the complete trommel screen design allows Multotec to calculate the stresses in the structure for a full rotation in order to optimise the fatigue life. The design process adheres to BS 7608:1993 for Fatigue Design Assessment of Steel Structures.
